How many of the 100 have you eaten?

A Facebook app offers this list of 100 "foods you should eat before you die," and estimates most people have eaten 20 or fewer. (At least online sources SAY that's what the app says; I don't give permissions to apps, so I didn't actually look.) But it's a fun list to go through. And alphabetical!
Note: This is, to belabor the point, NOT MY LIST. Just offering it for fun. Is there another mandatory one, in your opinion? Besides Krispy Kreme, which shows up in another version of the list? Leave in comments.

Tally and enjoy...

  1. Not too bad, my 'list' is shy only about 15.

  2. What about Czernina? That's some fine soup!

  3. I've eaten 28 of these things. Some I would NOT ever eat (bird's nest soup, haggis, chitlins, and a few others- no thank you!)

  4. 50 out of a 100, not so bad considering what a picky eater I used to be.

  5. Chicken and waffles is, hands down, the most idiotic concept in the history of food.

    Thank you very much.

  6. Fried pork skin sandwich at Lexington BBQ.

  7. What a cool list. I just sent it to a ton of my friends. Can you find chicken and waffles someplace here in Charlotte?

How did grits not make it on the list?

  8. How many for you, Helen?

  9. I've had chicken and waffles most recently at Smalls, in Elizabeth. Re: grits: I know, right? Inconceivable.

59 out of 100. Not too bad.

  11. I've had 86 out of the 100.

87 if you count the "legal" Absinthe I had in New Orleans some 30 years ago at the Absinthe House.

And if I can be allowed to substitute stir-fried grasshoppers in Thailand for "crickets"...

  12. I would add "gamalost" to the list.

It is a very strong Norwegian cheese...

  13. 97. Never had pocky, nettle tea, or kangaroo. I didn't know anyone ate kangaroo...

  14. Matt! Bernardin's on Tryon had kangaroo loin on the specials list recently! And pocky you can pick up at any of Charlotte's Asian food stores. Now... nettle tea. Anyone?

  15. I've had 74 of the 100.

  16. I have had 86 of the 100 foods, having traveled extensively during my fashion biz career, and living in NYC 15 years. But seriously, crickets? At least add sawagani, a tiny whole crab considered a delicacy by the Japanese instead!! They taste yummy and aren't 'ew', fear factor style.

  17. 41 including one not on the list, crocodile in Australia. And not it does not taste like alligator

  18. Pretty sure I'm gonna top out at 90 or so ... Haggis is not in my future.

But I'm at 64 now and really do need to try rabbit stew.

Any hints on where I can get zucchini flowers in Charlotte?

    Thanks! Great post.

  19. Astounding - 91-2; not certain about a couple. And several I had for my first time in Charlotte, where we've lived for only about 4 years: Chicken & waffles, chitlins at Floyd's on N Graham (delicious - like chicken & dumplings), Som Tam at Viet Thai. I plan to try durian on my next visit to Lang Van. I wouldn't bother with crickets or pocky, have no interest in suffering through the world's spiciest curry (phaal), and disagree environmentally with bird's nest (and shark fin) soups. Zucchini flowers are boringly inapparent, and would not put alligator, heirloom tomatoes, shark, snake, or Sauerkraut on a bucket list. But I could be happy eating nothing but foie gras, BBQ ribs, sweetbreads, sea urchin, and oysters in any form until death. And Price's chicken. And Maria Bonita's cochinita pibil. And Ilios Noche's lamb shank. And on & on.

  21. I've only eaten 12.... I'm a very picky eater. Although, I am only 15. I have plenty of time. :D
