Charlotte-based Salsarita’s now serves what it's calling the "World's Hottest Burrito," employing the Fort Mill-based PuckerButt Pepper Company's Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper.
That pepper is the Guinness World Record holder for "Hottest Chile Pepper" -- calculated to be about 300 times hotter than a jalapeno.
The burrito will be available at 11 Charlotte-area locations for a six-week trial period. It's made with grilled chicken, black beans, rice, corn salsa, tomatoes, cilantro and 1 teaspoon of Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper pepper mash, and goes for $12.99. Half of each sale will benefit Dove's Nest, part of Charlotte Rescue Mission, whose goal is to help at-risk women make major life changes.

The price scares me more than the heat. Slash it in half, and I'd be tempted!
ReplyDeleteI consider myself a Heat-Freak but there is no way I'm paying $13 for a Salsarita's burrito. It’s just more proof that the new ownership is ruining what was a beautiful thing. Adding “hot” sauce isn’t going to hide the horrible changes you’ve made to your burritos recently.
ReplyDeleteWay to complain about $6.49 of that $12.99 going to charity. Did you not read that 50% of the proceeds go to charity? Much better than most place's donating 1 or 2%.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should ready the entire article before complaining about a $13 burrito. 50% of all proceed go to charity, in essence, you are donating $6 every time you buy one. Better than most places that donate 1 or 2 percent.
ReplyDeleteIt's typical of the new management that they would double the price of their burrito -- not justified because the only difference between it and a chicken burrito is a teaspoon of hot sauce -- then give all the upcharge to charity and tell you they're giving away 50% of their proceeds. That's a net cost to Salsarita's zero -- less than the 1-2% you disparage.
ReplyDeleteWhere else can you get the Puckerbutt reaper sauce in a burrito? Nowhere and I bet it was not cheap to buy. that pepper is one of a kind. the charity aspect is really cool too.
