Top area chef leaves post

Longtime star chef Tim Groody has left Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse in Davidson. "We weren't on the same page," Groody said today, adding that it was a mutual parting, and that he's looking; "I'm working a bunch of things." He says he's thinking to stay in the lake area, hopes to do something soon and intends to try to do something "more so on my own."

Michael LaVecchia of Flatiron said he will miss Groody's culinary talent and style, "and his expertise in opening the restaurant was critical." He said he wants to return to the original direction, which emphasized "the highest quality proteins and boutique meats in the country, with a very simplistic execution ... making sure the price point fits with the (concept) and the economy." He said he's interviewing chefs today; he's interested in young talent, and hasn't ruled out hiring from within. Also, expect a marketing campaign from Flatiron; "we're still just in Davidson; we haven't got down to the Birkdale Village people (yet); we don't have the people at the Point at Exit 36."

Went there once. That was enough.

Very simpy portions and high prices. Asked for bread with my steak and was told they were trying to find bread they could serve at the right price point...come on. Consumers are not that stupid. But they were able to maintain decent margins I guess.

Service was ok, food was warm when delivered but not hot.

Lots of options so this is a one timer for me. Too many quality options to return.

After standing for 45 minutes waiting for a table, the girl tried to seat us 8 feet from the front door while other more preferable tables were empty. The cheese tasting plate was fit for a mouse. Big plate/puny pieces of cheese. Total ripoff! The $11 burger was small, and dry. Worst restaurant burger I've ever had. Not at all worth the drive.

Tim is a great chef and always comes up with creative dishes and presentations. I as well as many others wish his talent was back in center city.

Been there a few times. Horribly small portions for the price...and a very limited menu. Place won't last long.

Food is fantastic and portions NOT a problem for what people SHOULD eat. Great place for Davidson and I expect it to be for many years to come.

ive been there a few times too, and the food is great. portions are smaller than typical american restaurants but they are serving top quality local ingredients. it will be interesting to see how they respond to the changes.

Tried twice thinking first time was aberration. Won't be back as it is too expensive for what they serve and the food was average and that is being generous. Getting some bread required an Act of God.
