Amelie's open uptown

The uptown outpost of popular French bakery Amelie's (the original a 24/7 operation in NoDa) is open uptown at 330 S. Tryon St. Manager Lynn St. Laurent says they're experimenting with hours right now -- currently, they're open 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, to 9:30 Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10-4 Sunday. But says St. Laurent, "just like with NoDa, I'm here at 7:30 and people just keep coming in!"

Pastries and egg bakes, plus regular coffee (no espresso, at least yet) are available in the morning, with two soups, sandwiches and salads arriving from the original site about 11 a.m. each day for the lunch crowd. Folks are asking about baguettes to take home; St. Laurent says they're working on it, hoping to establish a strong order system, so you could pick them up on the way home at lunch or end of day. "We just don't like to sell them more than an hour or two old."

"Weird" hours are happening too; for example, the place opened for the Panthers game Sunday and got plenty of traffic, she says. "We'll extend hours as business warrants it." 704-376-1782.

I have mixed feelings about this. I've been going to Amelie's since 2008 when they first opened. But usually what makes places like this unique and draw visitors is that they are one of a kind. That's why people will drive from everywhere to be there. Once it becomes a chain, you almost always start losing out on the experience and then quality. I hope they do well, but just my 2 cents.

I live Uptown and am so HAPPY !

I just wish they located it over on 5th somewhere near Fourth Ward. That's were the majority of the people living Uptown actually live. I hope people go to it enough on the weekends so it warrants staying open.
Unlike the pathetic Dean and Deluca. What a joke of a place that is. They shouldn't even be able to use the Dean and Deluca name. It's nothing like their real stores up North. Especially the one in SoHo.

GO AMELIES !!!

Where was the scoop on this opening? It is kind of sad that the Observer reports this after it opens.

Not the Observers fault. Amelie's own website doesn't even state that they are now open in Uptown.

Thanks for the tip Helen - popped in 5 minutes before closing Tuesday and they appear to have been slammed! Barely a pastry left. Friendly folks, hoping to swing back by when the case is full!

actuallly it is the observer's fault that they don't get advance report of these stories. the whole point of the paper/website is to report things like this in advance, not repackage old news. how hard would it be to call Amelie's and find out when they might open?

FYI - stopped in at 7:05 on Tuesday and was told they were closed. I was able to get some discounted pastry out of it but still felt bad. Seems like this was a VERY soft opening, not meant as a grand opening as they are still gauging demand. I'm still thrilled that it's within walking distance of my house!
