Plaza-Midwood place closes; new plans announced

The former Common House is slated to become Kickstand, a burger bar aimed at families that will then emphasize DJ-driven dance music and varying music themes at night to bring in a more entertainment-oriented crowd. Common House closed last week, though the original operating partners have been gone for several months. Said Michael Adams, part of the ownership that bought them out (and also has Hawthorne Pizza and Loco Lime): "We felt we needed a fresh start." New TVs (to the tune of $30,000) and playing off the idea of old and modern bikes, with the name, are focal points. Target opening: Sept. 10.

Glad that it closed because the service sucked and the food portions were too small!

Portions too small? You could get a 3/4 lb. burger with a side for $10.

Hopefully Kickstand has some type of gastronomic challenge like Common House did.

"Elizabeth place?" Isn't this the Common House on Central Avenue at Hawthorn, next to NAPA, in Plaza-Midwood?

Thank you, blockhead. (Somehow that doesn't sound sincere. But it is...)

I ate here a couple times, and while it wasn't bad, it never really stood out either. That's a bad sign for a Plaza-Midwood restaurant that has to compete with plenty of great dining options.

Good luck with the new concept. Plenty of good places in CLT for burgers, so I hope that they're able to stand out. I'm looking forward to trying it once it opens.

agreed. food was completely & utterly forgettable.

The worst thing about this place, was, and still is......the parking. Every space full but no one inside. Oddly, the workers say its because of the Yoga class folks next door that take up all the parking? I had to take the family elsewhere every single time we stopped for dinner. They should get that fixed before opening another place there!

Why in the world another burger joint? With a Dj and 30 grand worth of TVs? Maybe this will keep the kids away!

Doubt it. Says that it will be aimed at 'families'. As a sever for 15 years, I can tell you that nothing is worse than having a 'family' come in and let the kids go crazy all over the place! Then we have walk around them with hot food, glassware, etc without killing them. Keep the brats at home if you are not going to make them sit down and eat. Hawthornes is the worst for this. Sounds like the owners could care less.

The menu was very limited (at least at lunch; I never went to dinner there), the food was mediocre, and the service was terrible (though not as bad as the ghastly Cuban Pete's). Getting our bloody marys rimmed with sugar was just the first offense. Why is it that Plaza Midwood restaurants don't seem to care about service?

It's the "Zada Janes Syndrome". Your servers are WAY too hip to concern themselves with your dining experience. They are barely able to force themselves to admit you exist. The cure for the syndrome is - eat elsewhere. Ask Cuban Pete.

Common House was a great place for some good beer and casual food. Never had a problem with the service or the food. Will miss it.

Going to be hard to compete with the penguin for a good burger. Guess that's where the "family friendly" angle comes in.

OMG, the place (Can't think of the name but closed on Sundays) next to (north)Thomas Street Tavern's servers are the same way....more concerned about themselves... I once waited for like 15 minutes while a server finished her conversation at the bar with another server....

Zada Janes should be bulldozed and cleared, but that wouldn't help. The same dead weight that owns Thomas St. Tavern owns it, and doesn't give a damn what people think. No business much at Zada Jane's except for Sundays. Yet, they don't care. That old money should go away. Nothing progressive about it!

I don't see how opening a new family oriented restaurant is a bad thing. Plaza Midwood is full of families that enjoy dining out. If you want to go somewhere where there are no kids, go to Thirsty Beaver or any other dive bar or just stay home. For those who think that the restaurant business is easy, why don't you open one, and we can all critique it and give you a hard time. Grow up!

The Common House WAS fantastic before the new operator took over a few months ago. The Common House rocked all the time and was the place to be and food was of the best in town. It is to bad that it is gone. The new theme is laughable.

This is a really bad idea. Anyone want to put $20 on this new concept closing in less than 6 months? They should have stuck with Common House. While the food wasn't anything worthy of labeling it as a gastropub, it was definitely good bar food. They had drink specials, events and an attentive staff.

The original Common House pre new owners was really good. We really enjoyed going to trivia every Tuesday for the all drafts $2.50. Once it was taken over by new managment the menu and the drink specials changed. They took away the $2.50 beer on Tues (changed to $3 well drinks) I think that really hurt one of their busiest nights. I heard that the Kickstand will still be having the same trivia hostess, which is good news because the Quiz Kat rocks, I just hope they bring back a decent beer special to draw people in.
