Hotel Charlotte closing

Hotel Charlotte friends got an e-mail Thursday night saying the restaurant is closing after service Saturday, Jan. 29. Owner Steve Black wrote "I had hoped we would be able to hang in until after Valentine's Day, or be able to complete the month of February. But it was not to be..."

The restaurant at 705 S. Sharon Amity Road, has served for more than three decades, celebrating its 31st anniversary this week with a special menu. That menu will still be in effect, according to the e-mail. 704-364-8755.

Have memories of the place? Comment, please...

Out with the old in with the new. Thats the Charlotte MO. Didn't they have a large beer selection? Charlotte is a cocktail town now!

Bummer. That was a great place to eat.

Buh bye!

I ate there recently after quite a hiatus. Compared to what we have now in Charlotte ( and I've lived here for 38 years) mediocre is the best thing I could say about it. Sorry.

Hope that Eddie's can stay open, at least!

Perfect location for a Mac's Speed Shop.

So why are they closing?

More change you can believe in.

It was much better as Providence Square Pharmacy where you could get a hot dog for $.25 and a Cherry Coke for $.10

Old-fashioned food, inferior ingredients, poorly prepared. Yeah, the beer was good.

Wow. Maybe you could include the restaurant's website in your blog entry? Pitiful job you're doing, Ms. Schwab. I hope Knight Ridder doesn't pay you a living wage to spout this uninformative drivel.

Part of being a "world class city" is not bothering with tradition.

Sad to see a Charlotte landmark go. I ate lunch there about 4 months ago and it was terrible. I was with 2 others who could barely finish their food for the same reason. That was telling.

A cocktail town my redneck foot, Charlotte will always be a beer town.

Dear Arcola,

Knight Ridder isn't paying Ms. Schwab anything. If you kept up with the times, you'd know the Observer was sold to someone else a few years ago.

Now go back into your cave.

Regardless of what it's like now, I had quite a few birthdays, dates, and oyster po'boys when it was great. The Hotel Charlotte introduced creole cuisine to Charlotte when Cajun Queen wasn't even a sparkle in someone's eye. I will miss it's presence and always cherish the great times and meals I had there.

When I was a kid it was a pretty big deal to go to Hotel Charlotte with my parents. That was usually where the adults went and it was a special occasion for a kid to go to a restaurant like that.
It is an old school steak house from when that was considered up-scale.
I loved looking at all the mugs on the wall. They had 100 beers and my dad would let me help him pick a different beer every time. He'd let me take a sip when that wasn't any kind of a big deal.it's one of those nostalgic places that brings back memories of my childhood.
When I turned 25 my mom gave me my first gentleman's watch.
There are people who appreciate Hotel Charlotte, like I do and then there are people whose only appreciation is for the trendiest thing.
They can't buy good memories or happiness. Hats off to Hotel Charlotte. Hats of to loyalty

Oh to have one more creole platter. It was a great menu and food but seems like they changed the ingredients the last couple of years that didnt quite do the histroy of the restaurant justice. Sign of the times I guess.

Everything dies at some point in time.

...had my first date with my wife there 25 years ago. I remember that you had to stand in line for a table and the place was "packed". Probably the passing of Danny's wife, and then Danny, and the advent of so many other places to eat slowly brought Hotel Charlotte to it's knees. SAM, the enduring anchor of Hotel Charlotte, hopefully with support, will be able to resurrect the mystique that was once "Hotel Charlotte".

Arcola just proves that there are many uninformed people making comments on these boards which should be no surprise.

My family lives in the Cotswold area and I grew up there. We used to go to HC once a month, but over the years it became once ever six months.

The last time I went, 2 months ago, the food was average (not what I was expecting for a $50 tab) and the server, who you could tell hated her job, served me water with ants in it. No joke.

It's a shame the last memory of that place was my poor experience.

The restaurateurs can whine about "the economy" or "the recession" but when an eatery closes its because of the the establishment itself. WAYYYYY Over priced food and bad service = closed.

The only real cool thing about that place now was being able to drink in there until 5AM.

The trip tomorrow to Hotel Charlotte to retrieve my mug and whatever else they're willing to sell me as mementos will certainly be a very sad and heart-wrenching endeavor. Thank you Steve and Sam and everyone else for everything, I was treated like a regular from the moment I bought my first beer while Sam was chugging a 2 liter bottle of Wink while i placed my order.

My investment club has met every month at HC for dinner meetings for several years, and we always had a great time. We're gonna miss it.

No offense intended by any means (and I am the same poster that's headed there tomorrow to pick up his mug and various other artifacts), but an investment club having its meetings at Hotel Charlotte? How are those portfolios doing? I'm sorry, but I hope you can appreciate the irony here.

I am a native of the Cotswold area, Hotel Charlotte has been a long time hang out for my family and me. It hosted many a birthday, family night, celebratory drink etc. We will miss it tremendously!

Used to go there all the time and loved it, but I'm very surprised it didn't close down several years ago. Prices have gone way up (and yes, they've gone up everywhere, but moreso at HC) and quality is terrible, especially compared to years past. The few times I've been in the past few years depressed me more than anything -- the food was bad, the place was empty... It was just a shadow of its former self.

I want to say I'm sorry to see it go, but really, it went a long time ago.

So sad to hear this! Where will I find the pimiento cheese balls? They are SO yummy. The end of a legacy in Charlotte - HC will be missed.

Arcola

Why on earth would the website of soon to close restautrant be a an important piece of information?

To hear or read a news of an establishment closing is sad. The legacy in Charlotte-HC will be missed by lot of their consumers especially those who have great memories of that place.

My husband and I became engaged at Hotel Charlotte 24 years ago tonight (St. Patrick's Day). We would always return and try to sit at "our table" each St. Patrick's Day. We missed you this year, but you will always hold a special place in our hearts!
