Free donuts! And discounted lasagna...

National Doughnut Day is June 3, and you can get one free one of any kind -- without buying anything at all -- at participating Krispy Kremes, which include the Gastonia, Matthews and Salisbury ones.

Participating Dunkin Donuts, meanwhile, give you a free one when you buy a beverage.

Neither's website makes it easy to see which are participating, so your best bet is to find the one closest to you and ... call.

In other National Days: July 28 is National Lasagna Day. Sibling chains Brio and Bravo! will cut lasagna prices in half that day. Reservations are recommended; Brio at 4720 Piedmont Row Drive, 704-571-4214; Bravo! at Northlake Mall, 704-597-1455.

There is not a Krispy Kreme in Charlotte.

YOU ARE RIGHT, Anon 2:50. My apologies (and I'm fixing the note); bizarrely, the company's spokesperson said "none of the Charlotte area locations" were doing the giveaway.

How's the Krispy Kreme stock craze, and store expansion going these days? Wonder how long it will be til the lawsuits concerning heart attacks and obesity start coming at places like Krispy Kreme fast and furious. Don't laugh, tobacco companies never thought it would happen either.

I don't care. I don't like Krispy Kreme. I prefer Dunkin Donuts.

Harris Teeter used to have good doughnuts, but now they have those crummy Krispy Kreme, so I have to get my doughnuts elsewhere.

KK is the best donut IMO. Also, there is a KK on Indy in Matthews - too bad I won't be able to get a free donut.

Not sure where you live but the Harris Teeter on John J Delaney gets their bakery items from a local bakery (not Krispy Kreme).

Helen, looks like another challenge arising.

KK for the win, no contest. Pass on anything else.

I've heard those people 'that ain't from around here' slam KK donuts for years. Unfortunately, they grew up on DD kind of doughnuts and that's all they know. As for me, I'm still craving donuts from the old Donut Diner in OD from 'back in the day'. They were the best but then that was after a long night of beer and shaggin.
