Updated: New uptown spot

Chef Jamie Lynch will be at the kitchen helm of 5Church, slated to open in spring at the corner of Church and 5th streets (in the former Molly MacPherson's), with a New American menu. N.C. foodstuffs will figure prominently in what's being described as "an eclectic blend of multicultural flavors" and the lineup will include housemade breads, pastas and cheeses. Other press-release descriptions: The interior is a "tongue and cheek (sic) interpretation of a neo-Victorian décor”; expect lunch, dinner and weekend brunch that are "casual, yet refined."

Lynch, most recently at Barrington's in Charlotte, has worked at Le Cirque, Café Boulud and Aureole, and plans here, according to a press release, "to develop New American-style seasonal menus that reflect the purity of local products and to advocate proper techniques of food preparation in a respectful manner.”

That location is cursed...over/under is 6 months.

Perhaps it wasn't the space but the less than desirable businesses in the space. Uptown deserves some new life and if some local Charlotteans want to give it a shot, they have my full support.

Tongue and cheek, good golly. Wish people would not leave the writing to the interns!

I agree with cozy. If the food is going to be good then I can't wait!
Who is the chef?

Basil and Dandelion don't seem to have any trouble drumming up business on that corner. Location isn't the best, but its not like its down by gateway. Put something there that will draw, and it will succeed...

I thought this was going to be the new location for the Queen City Diner?

MM was a terrible idea. Who really likes Scotch that much? An entire bar devoted to scotch? The same decor as the previous tenant? I can't figure out why it didn't make it.

She said "sic", so apparently that's how the press release was written.

Have they put in ramps for when the inevitable car drives into the window? How many times has that happened on that corner?

Wow! Barringtons is the best restaurant in Charlotte IMO. Could be a great new spot for my rotation.

2012 was supposed to be the end of the world so I am convinced the curse is lifted and this place is going to put a delicious pulse which is lacking in Uptown Charlotte! Move forth and prosper!

That corner is in such need of a good restaurant.
So many bad attempts over the years. With a good chef "at the helm" it sounds like 4th ward might be getting a new treat.

Helen - any idea what's going on with Delta's down at 525 N. Tryon. Was supposed to open last fall and they seem to do work intermittingly but it doesn't look close to opening. Any news?

I know the people behind the idea and I wish them the best of luck. I'm sure with there work ethic and dedication its sure to be a success. Jordan bland

That's a great corner. Basil rocks and you can't even get in to dandelion on Fridays and Saturday's.
Hope they fix the place up tho. It was looking very sad and dark when it was mm

It is not only the chef that is 100% responsible for the restaurant being a success. It is the owner, his work ethic, being hands on and the staff he chooses to hire. The reason the other places in that location have failed is because of the owners not being a present figure and the hiring of employees that thought cigarette breaks were more important than taking care of the customers. Look at Agusto Conte and Pierre Bader, they are sucessful because they are present. I also think all the tenants of that location concentrated too heavily on being a bar and a night spot instead of good dining.

I too must agree with Cozy, chalking up businesses failing due to a "curse" on a location is useless to me. I guess I'm just not superstitous. After looking at the chef's credentials, you can count me in. "Grandmaster" Chef Daniel Boulud's restaurants are among my favorites to frequent when I'm in NYC. Barrington's is one of my local favorites. I'm curious to see the interior design.

I live at 5th and Poplar Apts so I'm a block away. Can't wait to try out the food. Barringtons is one my top 3 restaurants. Hope this chef can make me come back for more.

Who is the owner? I agree with the earlier post that having a good chef is great, but the owner is also very crucial. Look at chai at basil. Hes is Basil, and without him eating there would be a totally different experience.
