Charlotte, let's talk

I'll be on the radio at 9 a.m. Tuesday, with Mike Collins on "Charlotte Talks" on WFAE 90.7 FM. Have a few burning restaurant questions? Let 'er rip -- comment here and I'll try to get to those, or call in tomorrow at 704-926-9323 or 800-603-9323, or tweet or Facebook the show. Share your thoughts!

I have one:
Why do so many Charlotte restaurants feel the need to serve all salads in a tortilla chip bowl? Yuck.

Hi Helen!

I enjoyed the show on WFAE a couple days ago. You talked briefly about Chowhound and I was surprised to learn that you don't find the advice you've gotten there all that helpful. My experience has been quite different.

Kathleen Purvis introduced me to CH about 5 years ago when I was planning a food trip to NYC, and I've been addicted every since. I've gotten countless good recs to restaurants and food experiences in Europe and the states, from Portugal, NYC, NOLA to Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Charleston and our own backyard. Not to mention lots of good recipes, cooking methods, etc. I learned about the many uses for bacon fat and an amazing way to scramble a creamy soft egg - it's been a revelation for me. I think the "secret" is knowing the community and therefore being able to ascertain who gives good info/advice and who's advice you should take with a grain of salt. Of course that sort of knowledge is only gained by spending lots of time on the boards.

Interestingly, I was in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago and got the chance to meet personally with one of my favorite CH'ers who has given me so much good food advice - GoodHealthGourmet. She is a lovely woman, a nutritionist, and it was great to sit down and have coffee with her.
