Food Network Update: OPRAH and Guy Fieri ... again!

Not only are North Carolina's own Avett Brothers on the popular cake show "Ace of Cakes" Thursday (Feb. 18), so is a cake for ... Oprah! As Avett manager Dolph Ramseur said Tuesday, "If Oprah's people have promoted it even averagely..." it should be quite a viewing audience.
Back story: Ramseur's a fan of the show and his wife, Dana, suggested he ask Charm City Cakes (the custom cake shop that stars in this Food Network reality show) to make an Avett cake. He wrote to them: "Look, I've got this band, they're very much like y'all: handmade, and everything they do is like it's made for each person." Shop manager Mary Alice Yeskey replied that she's a huge Avett fan and the shop was very excited. Originally it was to be a cake for the "I and Love and You" release, but timing resulted in this instead. Oprah makes that a little easier to swallow...
The Food Network's synopsis for this show: "Charm City Cakes gets a visit (and performance) from the country rock trio The Avett Brothers, when they come to town on tour. Lauren pesters Geof to oversee her work on a crazy groom's cake, a band bus. And Duff gets an impossible deadline to make a cake to take to a TV set in Chicago... and when Oprah calls, how can you refuse?" and a sneak preview of the O part is here.

Meanwhile, dish's Penny Craver confirms that the Plaza-Midwood restaurant will be on the Feb. 22 episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" -- Comfort Food Classics is the name of the segment. And in other dish news, the restaurant is running a special "until Spring" called Dessert for Two: two cups of coffee, two forks and one piece of housemade dessert for $5 plus tax. Melissa Myer makes all the place's desserts; she was part of the first Johnson & Wales Charlotte class, Craver reports.
