Observer Food Tournament will be ...

... about (drum roll please) french fries!

Send me your favorite fry place by Feb. 16. I'll scout possibilities and begin the tournament with 16 contenders, which will be whittled down week by week with a combination of taste-testing and voting (details to come).

The champion will be announced to coincide with the NCAA basketball championship. Previous years' winners: Moosehead Grill for wings and Luigi's for pizza.

NOTE: This is not a voting stage; it's just a call for suggestions on places we should try. The voting comes later. You can comment on this post, e-mail me at hschwab@charlotteobserver.com, tweet @helenschwab (be sure to use the hashtag #helendining), leave a message at 704-358-5250, or drop me a line at Helen Schwab, Charlotte Observer, P.O. Box 30308 Charlotte, NC 28208-0308.

The Comet!!!
You know, because they actually come from potatoes, sliced and cooked to order.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but the fries from East Blvd. Bar and Grill come from the freezer. Thats why they remind you of the fries from Press Box. Food service.

Bojangles' have the best fries hands down. The seasoning they use is awesome and they are nice and big - not skimpy and limp like some places.

Let's go with locally owned places like Moosehead, Rusty's and East Blvd Bar & Grill. Support our local business owners before any chain!

Sweet Potato fries at Encore in Blakeney!! They are addictive!

131 main, or Tenders in cornelius in a crunch. They're owned by the same people, but I like the ones at 131 better; thinner, more consistent cut, evenly crispy, and not seasoned like the ones at Tenders. Tenders' are still my 2nd choice though!

Hef's

Tenders Fresh Food's fries HANDS DOWN! You cannot beat fresh cut fries, especially with their HOMEMADE honey mustard sauce.
