Last chance reminder: NO anonymous comments will be counted. So if you want your vote to count, and you made it as Anonymous, please recast it in the next 30 minutes!
Each year, The Observer does a tournament, timed with NCAA basketball's March Madness, that focuses on one area dish. This year, we’re trying something new.
Here's how to comment, if you never have: Scroll to bottom of this particular post and click on the "119 COMMENTS" phrase. (Number may be different.) Then click on "Jump to Comment Form." Type your comment into the empty box, then click on Name/URL and enter your name or a screen name (like a pen name). Then hit "Publish your comment."
The category is sandwiches. But because so many restaurants offer so many sandwiches, and because I suspect readers know about some great ones I will never find, we’ll have readers “vote in” eight specific sandwiches from specific restaurants -- by commenting on this blog post by 5 p.m. March 7. For example, a reader might vote for the Darby’s Roast Beef Deluxe at the Common Market. You must name both the specific sandwich and the restaurant to have your vote counted. (PLEASE read the rest of the rules below before commenting!)
The eight specific sandwiches that get the most votes will be in the tournament. I’ll also choose the four most intriguing sandwiches suggested by voters – meaning that if there’s a sandwich that sounds terrific from the voter’s prose, but no one else seems to know about it, it can still make the tournament.
I’ll name an additional four of my own choices to round out our starting bracket of 16.
Other rules: No burgers. (That was last year.) No barbecue. (That’s in the future). No chains with locations outside the Carolinas.
And no anonymous comments will be counted. You have to have a screen name – which, as a reminder, doesn’t have to be your given name; this just allows us to count one vote per commenter.
After that, it’ll work as usual: I’ll create the pairings and publish the bracket March 9. Then readers will vote on pairings, and both those results and taste tests will be used to determine which sandwich advances.
We’ll announce the winner March 30.
Let the games begin. (Also: Folks who have Liked my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter @helenschwab got a head start on this. You can stay in the loop by Liking www.facebook.com/hsondining.

The "Awesome" Roast Beef Sandwich from 131 Main is truly awesome!
Number 19 all the way at Sub Station II - in Mathews off of Highway 74. The place with the best sandwhiches in North Carolina.
Sir Edmund Halley's Vegetable Club - really folks, it is sooooo good!
ditto on the cuban from Muellers
Fried Green Tomato Grilled Cheese Sandwich at Gallery! THE BEST!!
The "Loretta Lynn" at Something Classic Cafe on North Tryon - spicy pimento cheese, tomato and bacon, grilled, a great (and sinful) take on pimento cheese. And you can get it with pickled okra instead of a regular pickle! Yum!
2 sandwiches stand out amongst all others in my mind. And not only are they delicious, they are really affordable:
- #6 Grilled Pork Banh Mi from Le's Sandwiches & Cafe at the Asian Mall on the corner of N Tryon and Sugar Creek. Best Banh Mi in town, hands down, and it only costs $3.50.
- Egg Salad sandwich (panini?) from Sunflour Bakery. The bread is made in house, the eggs are sourced from a local farm using free range chickens. The eggs are coarsely chopped. Very little mayonaise. Perfect spice blend to accompany. Beautiful delicate flavor.
caprese sandwich from Ferrucci's in Cornelius. mozz, tomato, oil and vinegar, prosciutto, basil. all fresh on fresh bed.
best sandwich around.
Chicken salad grinder at Arthurs is TASTY!
Is this really a sandwich ... I say it is: Fish tacos at Cabo Fish Tacos. I have tried fish tacos everywhere, and these are by far the best.
The All Star at City Deli and Bagel on Elizabeth Ave. All Boars Head meats pilled high on everything, but this sandwich is a combination of a Ruben and a Rachel stacked about 3 inches high. It is awesome!!! A true NY deli!
Turkey Pita at Better Better and More or the Ruben at Comet Grill
Beef on Weck at Killingtons's in Huntersville (Wednesday nights only)
Chicken Salad Sandwich from Fran's Filling Station
I'll second the #6 Grilled Pork Banh Mi from Le's Sandwiches & Cafe at the Asian Mall on the corner of N Tryon and Sugar Creek. While you're waiting for your sandwich, get a steamed pork bun for $1 from the place deeper in the mall with Peking ducks hanging in the window (not sure the name).
Chantilly Wedge at Thomas Street Tavern!
I want these comments to be counted again because I agree with them.
The Grilled Cheese with Pulled Pork from the Roaming Fork food truck. (http://www.roamingfork.net)
#6 Grilled Pork Banh Mi from Le's Sandwiches & Cafe at the Asian Mall on the corner of N Tryon and Sugar Creek. Best Banh Mi in town, hands down, and it only costs $3.50.
Great point by Rob -- if you agree with a selection, DO COMMENT, repeating the sandwich. This is a vote, unlike other years in which I've asked for nominations first, votes second. Post your favorite, even if others have already posted it!
The London Broil Sandwich with onions/mushrooms at Alexander Michael's!
The Big Diaw at Mortimer's Pub....not sure what the sauce is, but it's amazing.
Fire & Brimstone Veggie Burger from Luna's Living Kitchen. A sandwich I dream about! Yum.
French Dip from The Herban Legend Food Truck
Grilled Pork Banh Mi from Le's Sandwiches & Cafe (now I want one for lunch!)

1. The Country Pate sandwich at Amelie's
2. The Mufaletta at Boudreaux's
3. The BLT at Crisp
Blackened Tuna BLT at Eez in Birkdale Village. Eveythingis better with bacon! I can't get enough of this sandwich.
"5oz. blackened Ahi tuna steak seared rare and served on kaiser wheat, stacked with bacon, lettuce, tomato and smeared with wasabi mayo"
the usual at 300 East. legendary.
The vegetarian reuben at Comet Grill is amazing. Tangy and rich.
The best Reuben in Charlotte is at Red Rocks in Strawberry Hill Shopping Center. I should know because if it's on the menu I order it! So many aspects to a good Reuben-quality corned beef, just the right amount of mustard and 1000 Island dressing, warmed swiss and sauerkraut and most important, grilled to perfection on authentic rye bread.
I second the Country Pate at Amelie's. Never thought I'd be a pate fan, but I saw this place and now I'm a believer (with apologies to Davy Jones, RIP).
Porky Pig at Jake's Good Eats. Absolutely delish!
The Porky Pig at Jake's Good Eats. Absolutely delish!

I'm strongly nominating the Bagel Bin in Northcross Center off Sam Furr Road. Now, I'm a fan of many of their sandwiches (the best in Mecklenburg County, btw), but you insist I pick one...so I'll go with the Reuben.
OMG!!!! The 855(turkey prov pita) at B,B&M is the BEST!!! They have really good Chicken salad too!!!

Katz' NY deli has the best reuben. They make their own corned beef, pastrami, etc. It's the real deal; a little piece of my former home.
The Chicken Sandwich at The Liberty is to die for!!! I am eating one right now, trying not let it drip/ooze all over my laptop. It's the mayo-stuff (it is called something fancy, but it is mayo!) and the good bun that make it...
The Blackened Chicken Club Croissant at Red Rocks ROCKS!!!!
Grindhouse (I add their famous marinated mushrooms) from BOSWELLS SANDWICH SALVAGE COMPANY in Stallings. Home-roasted lean roast beef and gourmet provolone, heirloom tomato relish, grilled onions and peppers on bakery-fresh hoagie. Oh. My. God. Good.
The Spit Roasted Turkey and Bacon Sandwich from Roosters.
Firehouse Subs, best subs in town hands down.
i can eat @ better better and moore every day-- the best sandwich is the turkey provolone pita that and a cup of their soup--- WOW!
ditto to george if i want soup or sandwich better better and moore is the place--their firecracker wrap is yummy!!!!!
The whoolis special is it. But the fri. special prime rib sand is of the wall. Not to forget all the subs are worth every penny you get MEAT on your sand, not just bread and veggies.
The Cuban from Midwood Smokehouse
The Cuban at the Havana Carolina Cafe in Concord (yes, Concord) hits the nail on the head.
Just up from Tampa a few years back, the two foods missed most (and couldn't seem to find in Charlotte) were Thai and Cuban. Finally stumbled on Thai Marlai in Cornelius and the Havana Carolina Cafe right next to the parking deck in downtown Concord.
Didn't expect much at first, but was instantly transported back to such legendary Cuban restaurants as La Teresita, the Lincoln, and the originator of the Cuban sandwich itself, the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City.
The garlic roast pork, the yucca, the ropa vieja, and the empanadas were just as was remembered and missed. Baking their own Cuban bread (like a sweeter, softer French bread) and using the roast pork, ham, swiss, mayo, mustard, and dill pickle as per the usual recipe, the Havana Carolina Cafe somehow elevates this simple combination far above the sum of its parts. Inexpensive and family friendly, to boot!
Prime rib sandwich Fridays only Whooli's grill best sandwiches around Charlotte
I work at bedder bedder and moore, and the turkey provolone pita, and reuben are best!!
My NY reuben was da-bomb @ Bedder/Bedder and Moore

Fran's #3-turkey, brie and granny smith apple slices with jezebel sauce on toast wheat is my favorite of her fantastic sandwiches at Fran's Filling Station (but you can't go wrong with any of them)
Bedder Bedder and Moore hands down...their soup and sandwiches are awesome.
The Friday nite prime rib sandwich is great at Whooli's Grill off Independence blvd just past Harris blvd going east.
NY reuben at Bedder Bedder and Moore beats any sandwich in America. Bedder Bedder and Moore has the best soup and sandwiches ever! GO BB&M!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are two sandwiches from STEAK and HOAGIE that stand out for my entire family.
It 1. the steak and cheese- it can be made so many ways, it was the one place that could make a sandwich just like home!
2. the Albacore Tuna is so good with or without toppings!!!
Steak and Hoagie's steak and cheese sandwiches and Albacore tuna....just like home!
The Monte Cristo at Cafe Really is the BEST!!!
Whoolis Special is the best sandwich in Charlotte maybe the world
The "Loretta Lynn" at Something Classic
Fran's #1 everything on the menu is great
The Grilled Reuben at Bedder, Bedder & Moore is the best! Lots of corned beef & the marble rye is awesome!
#657 Turkey & provolone at Bedder, Bedder & Moore. Grilled turkey, provolone, 1000 island dressing & cole slaw on grilled marble rye! Yummy!!!!
Go to Fran's Filling Station. It's all about the turkey which is roasted daily. Comfort food at it's finest. Turkey, sage mayo, cranberry relish & stuffing with corn, bacon & maple syrup.
I would throw my vote to the Stinger from Taste of Buffalo Pizza as well.
The REUBEN at MUELLER'S is fantastic

I swear by Sherrie's Ruben at Solstice Tavern in NoDa. People always give me a weird look when I tell them they MUST try a veggie version of this classic sammie, but holy neighborhood dive, it's delish, and I am NOT a vegetarian. Sauteed mushrooms, kraut, 1000 island and swiss on rye. You won't miss the meat. I promise.

Helen, I have been eating at Zink for years both the old downtown location and now the great southpark location, which is a little more convenient being closer to home. The lobster club is great, it is served warm and has pancetta (you can't go wrong putting bacon with lobster) I love it!
