Charlotte place makes Esquire top 8

The legend continues: Charlotte's Price's Chicken Coop made the final eight places in an Esquire survey, and now you can vote to keep the publicity rolling. "What's the most life-changing fried-chicken joint in America?" the national magazine asks. You know the answer, and it had better not be Bubba's in Dallas ... (Photo from Gourmet.)

Grease soaked tater tots and simi warm chicken? No thanks. I would rather have nothing.

Price's is the best of the best.

Popeyes Fried Chicken is so much better! Too bad we don't have those in Charlotte.

Price's is ok but nobody compares to Popeye's.

Shrimp Boat in Gastonia is better.

I'm as big a fan of Price's as anybody, but I'm beginning to think the legend of Price's is outrunning its coverage. It's definitely a landmark. Very few businesses, much less restuarants, last that long. So I think there is a lot of nostalgia and sentiment that feeds into the likeability of the place. And I think nowadays it's become a hipster thing to like Price's as this quirky out of the way place.

But if you plopped down a box of their chicken in an anonymous taste test, I don't think it would be as highly rated. It's kind of like remembering the comfort foods from your childhood. I always swing by for a chicken dinner when I'm in town. And I'm glad that it continues to draw fans. There's value enough in that.

They seldom change the oil in the fryers…GROSS. Maybe that’s why my order had a hint of fish flavor the last time I was there.

Chicken is too dry (have been there several times over the years with same results).

Can compare to any Grocery store deli fried chicken….Plain, lame, ordinary.

Wow Popeye's is making a run here, and Bojangles is not, that might say something

Try the chicken box. Way better than the chicken coop.

Popeye's chicken is the best. I wish they will open on up in Charlotte.

Price's is sooo overated...I agree that Popeye's good for a chain restaurant! I have to assume that ya'll have never been to THEE CHICKEN BOX Cafe or this would not be much of an issue...light, flaky, delicious skin on that juicy, tender meat!!! Best chicken around here, hands down...AND the sides taste better than either..do pickles, slaw & rock hard tater tots count as sides?? Please..

I have to admit it, too. While Price's is good, Popeye's chicken rules the roost. Bojangles is not even in the running.

I wish Ms Schwab and Ms Purvis would stop writing about fried chicken and bbq every other day. Its getting really old. Just like they are.

Hey, Anon. It's National Fried Chicken Day! But I'm not telling anyone but you, OK? You can also look at this elderly fan, just to confirm your aging theory: She wrote about the Day for the LA Times. https://twitter.com/#!/Jenn_Harris_
